About Safe Horizon

Established in 1978, Safe Horizon is the largest non-profit victim services agency in the United States. We touch the lives of more than 250,000 children, adults, and families affected by crime and abuse throughout New York City each year.

We provide compassionate and expert support for people who have experienced:

  • Domestic and intimate partner violence
  • Child physical and sexual abuse
  • Rape and sexual assault
  • Human trafficking
  • Stalking
  • Youth homelessness
  • Violent crimes committed against a family member and within communities

Safe Horizon partners with governmental and other community agencies and also advocates for policies on a local, state, and national level on behalf of those affected by violence and abuse.

Safe Horizon By The Numbers

Our Vision

Safe Horizon envisions a society free of violence and abuse. We will lead the way by empowering victims and survivors to find safety, support, connection, and hope.

Our Mission

Safe Horizon’s mission is to provide support, prevent violence and promote justice for victims of crime and abuse, their families and communities.

Safe Horizon has brought life and sunshine to my dark and horrific past! It’s time to move on.” — Armando, a Safe Horizon client

Our Commitment to Racial Equity

Racism is a form of violence. Just like any form of violence, racism harms and traumatizes the survivors we serve every day. Many of the systems that survivors use in our country disadvantage and harm people of color. This is called systemic racism and we will no longer be bystanders.

Safe Horizon has begun a journey to transform how we support survivors, families, and communities and to repair any harm we have caused. It starts by making a commitment to be anti-racist and to work towards racial equity. This means we are committed to acknowledging and addressing white supremacy, anti-Blackness, and systemic racism against all people of color. We started with recognizing bias and the harm racism causes in our own organization and have extended our anti-racism work to include our role in systems, communities, and beyond. Our goal is to be accountable and to share our progress both inside and outside of the organization.

We invite you to read our first Racial Equity Position Statement. This living and evolving document will reflect our anti-racist values and guide us in holding ourselves accountable. It will help us lead the way towards building a community, city, and world in which survivors of color heal, thrive, lead, and see justice. Please join us in our mission.
