A Day in the Life with Jana Kramer: Raising Awareness of Domestic Violence with Safe Horizon

The singer and actress, who recently revealed her own experience surviving abuse, visited a Safe Horizon shelter in New York City Wednesday before attending the organization’s Champion Awards. There, Kramer was presented with the Voice of Empowerment Award for telling her story openly, as well as working with Safe Horizon on their national anti-domestic violence campaign, #PutTheNailinIt.

Safe Horizon’s #PutTheNailInIt campaign brings awareness to the fact that although 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence, 67 percent have never discussed the issue with their friends. By painting your left fingernail purple, you can show support and help open a conversation.

I visited with Safe Horizon, which operates the largest domestic violence shelter program in New York City (and the U.S.). They provide temporary housing to over 850 women and 1,100 children after they’ve escaped an abusive situation each year. Here I am touring the shelter. This was their living area to read books, etc. And I loved these quotes on the wall – “You are amazing, you are brave, you are strong.” “Life is tough, my darling, but so are you.”

With survivors of domestic abuse. I loved meeting them at the shelter and hearing their stories. We smile ’cause we are worth it! We hung out in the backyard where the kids play – blessed that there is a place like this so kids can be outside and feel safe.

I’ll never forget the day I painted my Dancing with the Stars‘ partner Gleb’s nail to join #PutTheNailInIt campaign. We took the vow to end domestic violence.
